World Antibiotic Awareness Week

14 November, 2016

November 14-20, 2016

bioMérieux is proud to help raise awareness of the global issue of antibiotic resistance by supporting World Antibiotic Awareness Week.

Our company has a long-standing commitment to the fight against antibiotic resistance. Our leadership in this field has been recognized through invitations to join the White House Forum on Antibiotic Stewardship in 2015 and the recent UN High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance in 2016. On both occasions, our company was represented by Mark Miller, MD, FRCPC, Chief Medical Officer of bioMérieux.

A Global Prevalence Survey to assess Antibiotic Consumption and Resistance rates

First Global Point Prevalence Survey (Global-PPS) of Hospital Antibiotic Use and Resistance

This first global initiative provides a unique overview of the global burden of antibiotic consumption and resistance rates. Data collected from over 100,000 patients worldwide confirms the strong correlation between antibiotic use and bacterial resistance rates and reveals that:

more than 1 out of 3 hospitalized patients receives antibiotics

yet diagnostic tests were only performed in 1 out of 3 cases to support the chosen antimicrobial prescription

These findings raise awareness on the urgent need and benefits of setting up Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs in hospitals to curb resistance.

They also highlight the significant medical value of in vitro diagnostics and the need for more diagnostic tests and improved antimicrobial prescribing practices in all countries.

bioMérieux and Antwerp University unveil the final results of the first Global Point Prevalence Survey of antibiotic use and resistance rates in hospitals
Following the success of the first edition and thanks to bioMérieux’s sponsorship, the Global PPS will be repeated in 2017.
