Urinary tract infections: Identification

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most commonly seen infections in the clinical environment. Most UTIs are caused by Gram-negative bacteria, most commonly Escherichia coli or species of Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas, or Enterobacter, although other strains, such as Staphlyococcus and Serratia, are emerging1. Although UTIs are usually uncomplicated and can be treated with a short course of antibiotics, they can be painful and recurrent. Moreover, UTIs are involved in up to 40% of healthcare-associated infections (HAI), principally due to catheter use2. UTIs are increasingly caused by drug-resistant bacteria, making it especially important to identify the pathogen involved and resistance mechanisms, to effectively orient antibiotic therapy.

Culture testing with CHROMID® high-performance media enables rapid, reliable isolation and identification. Chromogenic substrates result in specific coloration for cultures that are easy to read and enumerate, even with mixed cultures. You’ll experience lower workload as well as time and costs savings with less need for confirmation tests.
